The ice at the north pole is melting rapidly as a result of climate change and as Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield says: "Take it from a couple of ice cream guys, if it's melted, it's ruined". As part of the Climate Change College initiative, the ice cream makers deployed a satellite beacon on the polar ice cap, that will gather data about weather conditions and ice drift. The data will be used by scientists to get a better understanding of the effects of climate change on the arctic.
But not only scientists are keeping an eye on the beacon. Liquid Earth created an interactive map that allows visitors of the Climate Change College website to track the path of the beacon as it drifts across the Arctic Ocean. Each day the beacon sends new measurements via a satellite connection, and the map is automatically updated.
